What is identity security?

Identity security is the practice of discovering, governing and safeguarding AI agent, human and machine identities across an organization. It combines identity governance, authentication, Privileged Access Management (PAM), continuous monitoring and threat detection, helping organizations increase visibility, reduce exposure, simplify compliance and improve operational efficiency.

Why is identity security important?

Identity has become a primary attack vector in modern cyberattacks. Threat actors often target identities, using social engineering techniques, stolen credentials and other methods to penetrate systems, traverse networks, exfiltrate data and disrupt business-critical applications and services.

Enterprises manage more identities than ever. IT administrators, developers, employees, contractors, machines and automation tools all require secure access to enterprise applications and data. Most organizations can’t confidently say how many identities they have or what each one can reach.

AI adds a new class of identity to secure. AI agents often inherit privileges from user accounts or shared service accounts, granting them access rights that exceed their requirements. Unlike other identities, AI agents can call other agents, chain across systems and execute complex workflows at machine speed, so a compromised agent can do damage faster than a security team can respond.

The most effective identity security solutions authorize identities at runtime based on policy and contextual data. They enforce the principle of least privilege at the moment of action, controlling what actions an identity can do after it is authenticated. The approach reduces the blast radius of an attack and helps contain damage if an identity is compromised.

How does identity security work?

Identity security solutions provide three core functions: visibility, posture and control. Visibility uncovers what identities exist. Posture determines which identities carry the greatest risk. Control enforces what identities are allowed to do.

Visibility: discovery and inventory

The visibility function continuously catalogs identities across the enterprise, including cloud, on-premise and SaaS environments. It maps the permissions, roles and relationships associated with each identity, so security teams can see which identities can access critical resources.

Posture: risk analysis and remediation

The posture function compares the actions that identities are allowed to perform with the actions they actually take. It flags overprivileged, dormant and misconfigured accounts, excessive standing privileges, stale permissions and other conditions that increase risk.

Control: enforcement and authorization

The control function applies the principle of least privilege, granting each identity only the permissions required by the task. Modern identity security solutions support just-in-time (JIT) access and runtime authorization. JIT access grants privileged access only at the moment it is needed, scoped to a specific task, for a defined period of time. Runtime authorization continuously evaluates privileged activity in real time, authorizing each action based on policy and contextual information.

What are the benefits of identity security?

Identity security delivers three main benefits:

Reduced risk. Least privilege controls, just-in-time access and runtime authorization limit unnecessary privileges and restrict what identities can do, reducing both the likelihood of an attack and the damage one can do.

Improved operational efficiency. Automated provisioning, privilege elevation and access revocation replace manual, error-prone lifecycle management and speed up onboarding and offboarding.

Simplified compliance. Unified audit trails make it faster and easier to demonstrate compliance.
